Recently there have been several inquiries regarding unsolicited emails claiming to be from the IRS.

If when checking your emails you notice an IRS-related message regarding your electronic tax payment, do not click on any links or open any attachments!  Also, remember that the IRS does not initiate taxpayer communication through email.

The email was timed to be delivered shortly after quarterly estimated income tax payments were due to the IRS.  In this case, taxpayers that use the EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax

Payment System) to pay their taxes were targeted. The scheme is to lure panicky taxpayers, who thought their tax payments weren’t processed properly, into providing their personal and financial information.
