IRS Combats Tax Refund Fraud and ID Theft

According to the IRS watchdog service, more American’s identities were stolen in tax refund fraud in the first six months of 2013 than in all of 2012.  Stopping identity theft and refund fraud is a top priority for the IRS.  They have expanded these efforts to better protect taxpayers and victims for the 2013 filing season.  The thieves are increasingly working from abroad, TIGTA found.  A single mailing address in Lithuania made $220,489 in fraudulent IRS refunds, while an address in Shanghai received $156,533.
