By a 204-vote margin, on May 4, 2010, the City of Grand Rapids voters approved a 15.4% income tax increase. The Grand Rapids income tax will increase from 1.3% to 1.5% for residents and corporations and .65% to .75% for non-residents. The tax increase will take effect on July 1, 2010 and is set to expire in 5 years, on June 30, 2015.

On May 11, 2010, the city commission voted to reduce the personal and dependency exemption to $600, effective July 1, 2010.
