Beginning January 1, 2017, the minimum wage rate in Michigan increases to $8.90 per hour. This is the third step in 2014’s Public Act 138 which approved the gradual increase of minimum wage to $9.25 per hour beginning January 1, 2018.
The state’s rate for newly-hired workers between 16 and 19 years old will remain at $4.25 per hour for their first 90 days. The 85% rule will also still apply for 16 and 17 year old employees (Employers pay 85% of state minimum wage as long as it is higher than the Federal minimum wage which currently remains at $7.25 per hour).
